A home exterior remodel can make your home the talk of the neighborhood! Exterior color changes cannot only change your home but that of the entire neighborhood. That can seem like a great deal of pressure when selecting color for your home! Here are a few tips to make your choice a little less overwhelming.
1. Plan around elements that are hardest to change.
a. For many homes it is brick or stone that is on the home already. If your home has brick or stone look for colors within those features.
b. Landscape can also be a factor. If you have invested in landscape features look at those for potential color hues.
2. Consider the architectural style and era of your home.
3. Consider the visual effect that you want to create from the street. When looking at your home, consider the homes around it. Look for colors that will work cooperatively with those exteriors.
4. Consider three or more levels of color. Look for shades, colors darker that you are selecting for the main body of color, and tints, colors lighter than the color you are using for the main body of color.
a. If your main body of color is dark, consider classic white or a similar pale color for your trim.
Pictures tell the final story! Mastics Dutch Ovation Siding in Pebblestone Clay compliments the colors found in the stonework of this beautiful home. When selecting exterior colors to compliment brick that is already on your home the best method is to try to match or compliment colors within the bricks themselves. In doing so you do not produce too much of a contrast to the exterior of the home allowing the brick, the siding, and accent colors to work together to define the architecture of the home itself.
This beautiful home was finished in Mastic Home Exteriors Quest Pebblestone Clay Siding. Detail was added to the architecture using Mastic’s Wicker wraps on the garage, corner posts and fascia. Mastic’s Pebblestone Clay accents were placed on the porch ceiling, beams and soffit. The overall effect compliments the brickwork of this beautiful home, providing eye catching curb appeal.

Church buildings have been a major part of our landscape. Seldom do we take the time to think about them architecturally and focus on their meaning or their beginning. According to The History and Symbolism of Church Buildings prior to the word “church” the Greek work “ekklesia” or “those who were called out” was the most commonly used word to describe the gathering of the Christian community. Early Christian texts and archaeology show that Christians gathered in the villas of the richer members of the Christian community. By the second century the church was growing in numbers and required a larger space to house it’s members.
Parish churches became scattered across the Christian world in every town and village. These churches were statements of regional diversity and vernacular technology and decoration. In the 20th century, the use of new materials, such as steel and concrete, had an effect upon the design of churches. The history of church architecture divides itself into periods, and into countries or regions and by religious affiliation. Common architecture for churches today is the shape of a cross with a dome or large vaulted space in the interior to represent or draw attention to the heavens.
The Presbyterian Church of Palmyra, Nebraska, traces its origins back to a Congregational Church founded in that township by Rev. O.P. Merrill. The church building was constructed in 1872. In 1875 N.C. Robinson, district missionary, directed the organization of the Presbyterian Church of Palmyra. The church building was released to the congregation in 1876. The congregation signed Articles of Incorporation on March 16, 1953.
Casey Nelson Exteriors had the pleasure of doing the exterior renovation of the Palmyra Presbyterian Church. White Ovations Mastic Siding and Shakes; White Soffit, White Window Wrap, White Fascia and White Gutters and Downs were used to complete the exterior.

Selecting exterior colors for your home’s makeover can be a daunting experience. There are a few subtle hints that can make this job much less challenging.
- Begin by looking at the colors that exist on your homes exterior. Colors within brick, which is already on the home or in your roof’s shingles, can lead you to your home’s new exterior color.
- Keep in mind that exterior colors are not as “trendy” as those found in interior and fashion design. The color that you select will more than likely be here tomorrow and years from now. You may want to begin your investigation of your home’s new color by driving around your neighborhood and looking at what colors exists on homes that you are drawn to.
- Talking about the neighbors! Keep in mind the colors that exist on homes next to yours. Avoid clashing color selections! Although you do want to stand out, you don’t want to be banished out of the neighborhood! Find color solutions that work with your neighbor’s colors.
- Light colors make a house look larger and more inviting, and if painted on a house that’s sited away from the curb, they can bring the structure visually forward. Dark colors, meanwhile, make a house look more substantial, and especially if applied to a home’s lower portion, they suggest stability and permanence.
- Maximize curb appeal by ensuring that your house and yard are in harmony. A green-painted house would get lost on a heavily wooded lot, while a bright color might appear too brash where landscaping is sparse.
- Add character to your home’s color by painting window trim and architectural details in a contrasting accent color. Avoid drawing attention to features that need to blend into the architecture of the home like the air-conditioning unit, gutters or unevenly placed windows.
This beautiful home in Omaha focused on many of the key components that were discussed. By using Mastic’s Corn Silk Structure Siding and terra bronze accents the home becomes a showpiece on their block!

Deciding the right colors for your home’s exterior can be a challenge. Should you go bold or basic? As with all decorating, color choice is vital to the overall appearance of the home. When colors are done correctly – it can hide flaws, when done poorly – it can draw attention to those flaws. A safe approach is to select two tints, colors that are lighter than your base color, or two shades, colors that are darker than your base color. Either the lighter tints or the darker shade could be used for the body and the opposite for the trim. The third contrasting accent color can then be used to accent your entry door.
The McKnight’s of Plattsmouth selected Rugged Canyon Structure Siding as their base color. Detail was added to the architecture using Terra Bronze wraps and fascia, Rugged Canyon soffit, Rugged Canyon downspouts, and Terra Bronze gutters. The overall effect is dramatic and very appealing to the overall architectural design of this beautiful home.
